i was thinking of buying an xbox, but i have heard of many stories that the xbox breaks alot, overheats etc. . . but the elite doesnt? and if i do buy the xbox what should i do to prevent it from breaking?

I want to connect my Xbox 360 to Xbox live, but i don’t want to have to pay 100 bucks for the adapter. I don’t have a computer neer my Xbox. However, i do have wireless internet in my house.
